We did some exciting work this year with Geoptic, applying their Muon imaging sensors at the William Edwards’ iconic bridge in Pontypridd. The bridge now standing was Edwards’ 3rd or 4th attempt (depending on which version of the story you read). The transverse tubes that make it so distinctive were added on the final build after the previous failed by the crown bursting upwards.
There have been rumours that the bridge contains additional voids since the late 1700s. As a grade I listed scheduled monument, the options for checking whether these rumours are true were limited. Muon tomography provided the answer.
Conference tickets still available if you want to find out! Look out for publicatios in due course. I’ll also be talking about this bridge at the IStructE History Study Group (in person in London and online) on the 5th October.
